In choosing a criminal defense
lawyer, do not underestimate the importance of local counsel.
There is no substitute for the local knowledge that comes from
familiarity with courthouse staff, prosecutors, judicial staff, etc.
Each state in the United States has
its own laws and its own criminal justice system. Therefore,
if you are arrested for a crime in state court, you need a lawyer licensed to
practice in that state. Occasionally, people contact us about
the possibility of accepting a case outside of New York. As
flattering as that is, and while courts may even permit such
arrangements, we do not accept cases that would take us away from
where we can do the absolute best for our clients. Local
knowledge is one of the most valuable tools any criminal defense
lawyer has to offer his client and we do not seek to accept cases in
which we will not be able to offer our clients everything possible.
Instead, we refer clients seeking
representation outside New York State to lawyers we know to have the
legal knowledge, extensive experience, and local knowledge to provide an
