Other New York Courts

New York City criminal court is not the only place in which accusations of criminal conduct can be made against New Yorkers. Federal Court, Family Court, and Immigration Court are three other forums. In some cases it is possible to have to deal with more than one court at the same time for the same conduct.

Courts Related to New York Criminal Courts

Federal Court

If you have a case pending in Federal Criminal Court in the Southern District or Eastern District of New York, or if you believe are being investigated by Federal agents in connection with possible Federal charges, you need the advice of an experienced New York Federal Criminal Lawyer. This article is a place to start.

Family Court

Family Court in New York City handles many accusations that would be considered crimes if they were committed by adults. But this is where the similarity ends between Family Court and Criminal Court. A host of different rules apply. Furthermore, those accused of child neglect and abuse, and even domestic violence may find themselves defending in both courts at the same time.

Immigration Court and Immigration Consequences

Being accused of a crime is never a great thing for anyone. But if you are not a citizen (even if you are a legal resident) being accused of a crime can have an enormous impact on your life and call into your question your ability to remain in or enter the United States.

Civil Forfeiture

In some cases, the police or the District Attorney's Office can seek to keep property discovered in the course of the investigation of a criminal offense. You can be sued in civil court for forfeit property (cars or cash, for example). The outcome of the criminal case is irrelevant since you can be sued for the property in civil court where the burden of proof is far less.
